University of California (UC) President Janet Napolitano, who once served as Barack Obama’s Secretary of Homeland Security, is currently under investigation after she and her staff were accused of tampering with a survey ordered by the state auditor.
The Daily Caller reported that former state Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno as well as a local law firm have been hired by UC’s board of regents to investigate Napolitano’s office.
“Justice Moreno will provide expertise in the areas of fact-finding and neutral evaluation,” Board chairwoman Monica Lozano said on Monday.
This all started when state auditor Elaine Howle said the university was insisting it needed to increase student tuition fees to cover costs while it clandestinely reserved $175 million in savings. Napolitano’s office was then accused of inflating the cost of administrating the 10-satellite university complex and actually provided less funding than the official budget indicated.
Howle has accused Napolitano of vetting confidential responses that the audit from the university’s administrators.
Last month, Napolitano said her staff only assessed the responses after they had already been sent to the state auditor.
